Keystone Apartments
300 Harrison Avenue
Charleston, Illinois
The first apartment building in Charleston,  Walter G. Alexander and Harold W. Greene began construction of
the Keystone Apartments in June 1922.  Alexander's father, John Walker Alexander, opened a dry goods store
on the square in Charleston in 1899 and the Alexander family operated a retail store at various locations on
the square until 1976.  Alexander and Greene owned the building until 1944, although they temporarily lost
title to the building during the Depression from 1933 to 1936 due to failure to pay property taxes.  Over the
last 87 years the building has had only four owners.

The Keystone Apartments offers four spacious one bedroom apartments and a large two bedroom apartment.
A coin-operated washer and dryer is located in the basement and a parking lot with reserved parking spaces for
each unit is located adjacent to the building.  Water and trash removal are paid by the owner.  Residents share
the cost of the steam radiator heat, which provides a moist, even heat during the winter.
